What do you mean by Dhanteras ?
In the term ‘Dhanteras’ , ‘dhan’ denotes connoting wealth and ‘teras’, denotes the propitious thirteenth day, occurring at the fag end of Ashwin month.
However the thirteenth day of Ashwin month is also famous as Dhanwantari Triodasi or Dhanvantri Jayanti. Hence the birth anniversary of the God of Ayurveda. Even the culture follows with Yamadeep which is the lamp for the God of death. Therefore Yamadeep is lit outside home to ward off any untimely death of any family members.
Auspicious time to perform Lakshmi puja
Out of these 12 Significance of Dhanteras , performing Dhanvantri puja is one of them.
Also we should do Lakshmi Puja on Dhanteras or Dhantrayodashi during Pradosh Kaal which starts after sunset. Actually it lasts for 2 hours and 24 minutes approximately
We don’t advise to choose Choghadiya Muhurat to perform Dhanteras Puja as those Muhurtas are good only for travelling. The best time for Lakshmi Puja on Dhanteras is during Pradosh Kaal when Sthir Lagna prevails. Sthir means fixed i.e. not moveable. If we do Dhanteras Puja during Sthir Lagna, Lakshmiji will stay in your home; hence this time is the best for Dhanteras Pujan. However Vrishabha Lagna is considered as Sthir. Mostly it overlaps with Pradosh Kaal during Diwali festivity.
Why we worship Lord Dhanvantari during Dhanteras ?

Significance:

Hence, this day is also celebrated as National Ayurveda Day. On Dhanteras Puja, people purchase gold and silver items and deck up in new clothes. They also decorate their homes with lights and colours to welcome God Dhanvantri.
On the day of Dhantrayodashi, Goddess Lakshmi came out of the ocean during the churning of the Milky Sea. Hence, Goddess Lakshmi, along with Lord Kubera who is the God of wealth, is worshipped on the auspicious day of Trayodashi. However, Lakshmi Puja on Amavasya after two days of Dhantrayodashi is considered more significant.
History and story of Dhanteras
According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that Dhanvantri, the lord of Ayurveda, emerged during Samudra Manthan on this day. Samudra Manthan was done by all gods and goddesses to churn the oceans and the sea. It was this time when Dhanvantri appeared with the holy text of Ayurveda in one hand and a pot full of elixir in other. He is also referred to as the physician of gods and goddesses.
As per the ancient legend, Dhanteras is related to the story of a 16-year-old son of King Hima whose horoscope had predicted his death because of the snake bite on the fourth day of his marriage. On that day, his newlywed wife did not allow him to sleep and laid out all her ornaments and many gold and silver coins at the entrance of the sleeping chamber.
he narrated stories and sang songs the whole night to keep her husband awake. The next day when Yama, the God of Death arrived at the Prince’s doorstep, his eyes were dazzled by the brilliance of jewelry and lights. Yama could not enter the Chamber and rather climbed on the top of the gold coins and sat there the whole night listening to the stories and songs. He silently went away the next morning.
The young prince was saved from the clutches of death because of his new bride and the day came to be celebrated as Dhanteras. which is why Dhanteras is also called Yamadeepdaan, which means offering earthen lamps to Lord Yama.
Story of Goddess Lakshmi
A famous sage named Durvasa once cursed Lord Indra and said, “As the pride of wealth has entered your head, let Lakshmi leave you”. This curse was true and Lakshmi left him and in turn Indra became weak and the demons entered the heaven and defeated him. After some years, Indra went to Lord Brahma and all of them went to Lord Vishnu to find a way where Lord Vishnu instructed them to churn the sea of milk. Because on churning, Amrit would come out and drinking that would make the gods immortal.
The Gods and Demons both were struggling for this Samudra Manthan and Amrit-Pan. Mandara Mountain became the churning rod and Vasuki, the king of the serpents became the rope for this great work. Lord Vishnu himself took the avatar of a tortoise and lifted Mandara Mountain at his back. As the churning started, a beautiful and smiling lady came into view who was wearing a garland of Lotus, stood on a Lotus, and held a Lotus on her hand – she was none other than Goddess Lakshmi.
The sages started chanting hymns and showered holy water on her. Upon churning the sea more, Dhanvantari emerged carrying a vessel of nectar or the Amrit. Lord Vishnu then defeated the demons and gave the Amrit to the Gods. So, on this day of Dhanteras by worshipping the Tulsi and the Akashdeep, we emblematically pursue the kindness of Nature which is the definitive source of health and wealth. In addition to this “Laxmi-Puja” is performed in the evenings when diya of clay are lit to drive away the glooms of evil spirits.

Reason of celebration
Diwali, also spelled Divali, one of the major religious festivals in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism, lasting for five days from the 13th day of the dark half of the lunar month Ashvina to the second day of the light half of the lunar month Karttika. (The corresponding dates in the Gregorian calendar usually fall in late October and November.) The name is derived from the Sanskrit term dipavali, meaning “row of lights.” The festival generally symbolizes the victory of light over darkness.
Observances of Diwali differ depending on region and tradition. Among Hindus the most widespread custom is the lighting of diyas (small earthenware lamps filled with oil) on the night of the new moon to invite the presence of Lakshmi, the goddess of wealth. In Bengal the goddess Kali is worshipped. Furthermore In North India the festival also celebrates the royal homecoming of Rama (along with Sita, Lakshmana, and Hanuman) to the city of Ayodhya after defeating Ravana, the 10-headed king of the demons, thus connecting the festival with the holiday of Dussehra. In South India the festival marks Krishna’s defeat of the demon Narakasura. Some celebrate Diwali as a commemoration of the marriage of Lakshmi and Vishnu, while others observe it as the birthday of Lakshmi.
