Pohela Boishakh the solar new year

As Pohela Boishakh or Bengali New Year is new year celebration in West Bengal. In fact it marks the first day of the initial month of Boishakh of the Bengali solar calendar. Therefore Pohela Boishakh the solar new year needs unity of Bengali community.

When we celebrate Bengali new year ?

Moreover Bengalis all over the world celebrate New Year on this day . Usually it falls on the 14 or 15 April. In other regions of India too people celebrate the solar New Year. Also our neighboring country Bangladesh celebrates Bengali new year on 14 April of every year.

How we celebrate Pohela Boisakh

To celebrate this festival, Bengalis greet each other by saying “Shubho Nobobarsho” which translates to “prosperous New Year”. Of course a number of fairs encourages and enhances the celebration across West Bengal and Tripura .

People celebrates Pohela Boishakh by spending time with family, visiting fairs, cleaning one’s houses and adorning new clothes. As the year ends, the Bengali community buys the Panjika. However Panjika is a book containing all important dates for the upcoming New Year. All the planning of auspicious events including housewarming and weddings is according to Panjika.

New financial year

Also marks the beginning of the new financial year for the Bengali business community. On this very day people visits shops and buys valuables as it signifies good fortune. In fact they worship Lord Ganesha and Goddess Lakshmi on this day. People wear new clothes and indulge themselves in sweet delicacies, to celebrate the day.

Prabhat Pheries or Morning processions

Early in the morning of Naba Barsha, Bengalis take out processions known as Prabhat Pheries. To participate in Prabhat Pheris ladies clad themselves in traditional Bengali sari (white sari with red border) and flowers in hair while men wear dhoti kurta. The day is spent in feasting and participating in cultural activities. People also visit friends and dear ones to wish each other “Shubho Nabo Barsho


Although decoration of houses is enlights with traditional alpana designs on the floor. A number of delicacies including ilish maach, dhokar dalna, rice, and chanar dal increase the joy of Pohela Boishakh the solar new year.
